3-Minute Limit: The Replacements Stink

Posted by Mercury at 11:04 AM

Welcome to 3-Minute Limit, your favorite punkified podcast where songs over three minutes are whittled down to a more digestible wad. This week, host Lance Chess showcases one of his favorite bands of all time, The Replacements. Hailing from the early ’80s Minneapolis post-punk scene, The Replacements were infamous drunks often sacrificing musicianship for acrobatics and entertainment. Check out tracks from their Stink LP on today’s episode of 3-Minute Limit!

PURE POD FOR NOW PEOPLE!

Posted by Mercury at 1:31 PM

Welcome to a new podcast series called Pure Pod For Now People, hosted by local gadfly Matt Slessler. Listen in as he discusses music in such trivial forms, that it makes people who stand in line at Star Wars movies seem normal. Each week, Matt, his sidekick—a mysterious sexy-sounding lady named Magenta, and a revolving panel of guests, debate topics such as: desert island discs, the most underrated/overrated bands of all time, and who would win in a fight between Bright Eyes vs. Belle and Sebastian! This week’s guests are local rockers Patrick Kearns & Kelly Simmons from Blue Skies For Black Hearts (pictured below). Check it out!

The Lamb Strikes Back!

Posted by Mercury at 5:03 PM

feat1-160.jpgA few weeks ago, the Mercury’s Matt Davis slaughtered a lamb during a TrackersNW class held at Tryon Life Community Farm, and wrote all about it—down to the bloodiest detail. Controversy ensued, with letters pouring in from readers who were outraged over the piece’s perceived insensitivity to vegans, who were upset over Sammy the sheep’s death, and who were frustrated that the larger issues—like the ethics of eating meat—weren’t more thoroughly addressed.

So we invited a handful of people—from TrackersNW, from Tryon, and from local animal rights group In Defense of Animals—to sit down with Matt and Marjorie and talk about the piece and the issues it raises.

Give it a listen, then join us back in Blogtown, where the discussion continues.

Dave Allen: Episode 14

Posted by Mercury at 4:35 PM

This week Dave Allen gets heavily into sub bass and tight backbeats. There is nothing he likes better than the bass end of things and these cuts he’s throwing your way are an edited version of a DJ set he did with his latest DJ software set up. Listen with a sub woofer, people. Here’s the track list:

1. Tosca - Honey (Supatone Dub) from the album Different Tastes of Honey.
2. Shriekback - Evaporation from the album Care.
3. Terranova - Bombing Bastards featuring Tricky from the album Close the Door.
4. Tortoise - Paralysed an unreleased Gang of Four remix.
5. Alpha - Nyquil from the album Come from Heaven.
6. Blunted: The Edinburgh Project - Feelin’ Fine featuring Sugga Bullit meets Farmer C from the compilation album Blunted: The Edinburgh Project.
