It’s Friday, which means Merc music editor Adam Gnade’s podcast, Best Show/Worst Show, is LATE. But no matter, this one’s a gem, with tracks by Deerhoof (four of ‘em!), Jimmy MacBeath, Wooden Wand, and Elmore James! Hit it up!
Deerhoof plays this Saturday at Wonder Ballroom. Check out a nice photo of them below.

After a short hiatus, It’s the Jump Off is back with a three-parter about Chas Bowie’s old hometown of Houston, TX. The Houston Renaissance of a few years back was one of the most significant recent shifts in the hiphop landscape, as a city besides New York or LA was on the receiving end of a ton of national attention. Within a few years, people were tired of picking Houston over for undiscovered rappers and began snooping around the Bay Area. But once the fertile history and talent of Screwston had been unearthed, there was no putting the cat back in the bag. In the next two weeks, we’ll look at the history of hiphop there, and check out what’s going on in ‘07. Today’s show, though, is all about the guys who blew up big a few years ago—underground tracks from Chamillionaire, Paul Wall, and Mike Jones, as well as Houston mainstays Chingo Bling and Li’l Flip. Sit back and enjoy, because this one’s definitely the Jump Off.

This week on the Rock Report, hostess Christine S. Blystone takes a break from interviewing local bands, puts her iTunes on shuffle, and shares some really great tracks. Get ready to rock out with this week’s grab bag deluxe episode of the Rock Report.

This week on PURE POD FOR NOW PEOPLE, Matt and Magenta address the term “guilty pleasure”, make a super bowl pick, and become the first show in the history of the world to play Wham and Captain Beefheart back to back!

This week Dave Allen is especially pleased to be able to talk to the wonderful Alela Diane, who recently released her album The Pirate’s Gospel on Portland’s Holocene Music label. Alela discusses how growing up in Nevada City, CA moulded her outlook on life and how it informed her music and songs; how she thinks the idea of KEXP’s PDXplore program is a good one; and tells us about new songs she has up her sleeve. In the podcast you will hear “The Rifle” from her album and also two new cuts—“My Brambles” from a UK vinyl-only album, and “Dry Grass and Shadows” from the compilation The Family Album, released on The Grass Roots Record Company.
