Dubby Dubby DJ! For this week’s So Hot Right Now, Mike Williams connected with San Jose’s Selector Dub-U for an exclusive mix. Selector Dub-U has made quite a name for himself in bringing the Dubstep sound to the masses (even though he doesn’t necessarily classify himself as a Dubstep DJ), from playing his radio show on Sub FM, playing shows, producing original material, remixing, and working behind the scenes. Need more proof for the case? Then let’s just call this exclusive mix “Exhibit A” and call the case closed.
Check out our interview with Selector Dub-U after the jump!
DJ’s & musicians get your dub on at: sohotrightnow@portlandmercury.com
MERCURY: Throw your hood up.
Selector Dub-U: I now live in San Jose California. Before SJ I lived in San Francisco for about 14 years. I grew up in Denver Colorado.
Would you classify yourself as primarily a "Dubstep DJ"?
I am an all around DJ. In the past few years I have been very enamored with the dubstep sound so a lot my mixes and my radio shows reflect that. Before dubstep came along i listened and still DJ- Hip Hop, Dub, Reggae ,House, Garage, Techno, Dancehall, Ragga, D&B, and 2 step. I am pretty broad minded over all when it comes to music. I grew up playing drums and in the 80's i toured in a punk band called Short Fuse. I am influenced and listen to Funk, Jazz, Soul, New Wave, Metal, Punk etc...
What's up with Sub FM?
Subfm is a an internet radio station that has been around for about 3 years. I have been dj'ing on it for a little over a year now. I play every 3rd Sunday of each month from 3pm to 5 pm Pacific time. I play a variety of music on the show but mostly dub and dubstep. I often feature guests as well on the show. Next month show is going to be a Stones Throw special with Baron Zen's DJ Sweet Steve and Tekblazer. You can stream subfm by going to http://www.subfm.com and clicking on the submarine.
Subfm also has lively chatroom and it was voted best internet streaming dubstep station by MixMag.
Any other Selector Dub-U projects we should be on the look out for?
Well. I have worked on some production with a gentlemen in Oakland called Advance we produced a dubstep track called Sticks and Stones that is on my virb page. Also I remixed a track with Tekblazer a song for a band called Baron Zen, which should be coming out at some point on Stones Throw Records. I will be producing more this year and hopefully doing some more remix projects.
Word, so what else have you been getting in to?
I just got back from a gig in LA thrown by Nasty Sonix. I am also a resident at a monthly dubstep night in San Francisco called Narco.Hz with JuJu and Djunya there is also a label by that name run by D&B and Dubstep producer Juju that has releases from Juju, Djunya and Tes La Rok. I think JuJu is doing a Narco.Hz event on July 20th in Portland, so be on the look out for that!
In addition to the other stuff I do as a dj - I am artist relations for SureFire Productions, which throws large dubstep events in SF.
(By the way, for bookings, to send demos/ promos/ music or to get remixes done or whatever- feel free to contact me @ my email: selector.dub.u@gmail.com or @ my virb or myspace page.)
