Matt, your all-out geekiness for Elvis Costello matches mine to a freakish level. Lemme ask you, did you start listening to Elvis Presley at all because his name was Elvis too? I kind of did, for reals. I even went through a period where I rented a lot of his movies and watched them by myself, even that awful one where he's a crop duster whose partner gambles all of his money away and he has to babysit a kid, I think it was "It happened at the World's Fair" But I digress, hard.
I LOVE, fucking love that song Riot Act, off Get Happy, agree that his songwriting is my absolute favorite of all time, my other favorite songwriters are Graham Parker and Bruce Springsteen.
It was so fun listening to your song selections, and every time, I could almost be swayed to change my own personal faves to yours, because I am a fool and a sucker when it comes to Elvis.
Did you ever hear the Linda Ronstadt cover of Girls Talk? It's actually pretty good.

Francine
What was my deal with saying "at the end of the day" 500 times during the podcast though? Note to self, have magsy smack me every time I say that.
It was a blast to do the show, I had such a hard time with the whole Green Shirt vs Party Girl, and Temptation is one of my favorite EC songs ever, but so hard to leave off Riot Act, Motel Matches, Man Called Uncle, King Horse, etc. etc.
Now I am all inspired to go blast some more in my car!

Enjoyed the show immensely. I do think it was a bit of cheat though. I can sort of understand eliminating "Almost Blue" --the country album you couldn't even mention by name--as it's all covers. But as much as we all agree that "Goodbye Cruel World" is Elvis' worst album, it still has a few songs that I think deserve rescuing from the slag heap. (I would love to see Elvis rerecord this album now.) And instead of "best song of the unreleased stuff" (or whatever you called it) why didn't you just include "Taking Liberties?" With the release of various expanded CDs, it's gone away now, but at the time most of us had no other access to these great songs, and for a while it was maybe my second or third favorite Elvis album, with some of my still favorite songs from the early days, and therefore fondly remembered. (I still have the original CD pressing too, now out of print.)
Oh well. Guess I am just being equally obsessive. Thanks for doing this. I loved it.

Yes Jim, I totally cheated on it. I could have sworn I actually called Almost Blue by name, now I have to go back and listen.
I had to keep the show under an hour, and something had to be left out, so G.C.W. got the axe.
I guess my decision to not include anything off of Cruel World was that I really couldn't think of anything on there that was as good his unreleased stuff. I remember when I got TAKING LIBERTIES, I, like you, was stunned at a song like CLEAN MONEY (holy shit, that's LOVE FOR TENDER!!!)
Maybe I will have to do a part 2 now..HA!
Thanks for the kind words.

I really didn't think I did a very good job setting up the albums. I was so concerned about time and getting everything in, I didn't properly set up an album liked Armed Forces where E.C. used facism et. al for as a metaphor for relationships. Yep, I really need to do a 5 part series on this.
