BOOOOOOOOOOM. This week Mike Williams recruited Lorn to guide us on the sonic journey of So Hot Right Now. Lorn is an acclaimed producer of dark, post-apocalyptic scratch beats, well known for his heart-stopping remixes, and has been tearing up dance floors worldwide with his original productions. Tune in and see why Mike says, “Lorn is blowin’ up like Tyra Banks’ waistline.”

Lorn Q&A with Mike Williams

MERCURY: Where are you livin'? Throw it up.

LORN: Currently in Williamsburg area of Brooklyn, NYC - I've actually moved three times already since coming to NYC in September. First I was up in Harlem (shout out to Adoptahighway), then down in the West Village (Bedford Rockers RIP) and now here. Not sure where I'll end up after the lease is up on this spot, but I imagine I'll be sticking around New York for a while...

What have you been up to these days?

I really don't do much else besides make shit that makes my head nod. I've finally been able to go dip around on my bike, though, so I've been taking full advantage of it. Before I came to NY a couple of my friends built the illest bmx bike for me out of spare parts, then custom painted it. It's 1-speed but it's a diiiippper. I'm also pretty convinced that it's lucky because I've almost died about 5 times in traffic. Even has 'LORN' painted on the handlebar clamp. Other than that, just trying to make harder tracks and get my name out there more.

You on a record label?

No sir. Grief Machine is being put out by a dope French label VGR, but I'm not signed to anything. I'd ultimately like to start my own label, though--just build an army of solid musicians who are willing to break rules take risks with their work. My core group of friends back home (Shit Life crew) are all into hardcore punk/metal/grind etc so I've come to really appreciate the DIY culture. I imagine most of the stuff I put out from now on will be done D.I.Y. unless I get approached by a legit label.

Upcoming releases? (Grief Machine is the latest, correct?)

Grief Machine is my latest, and is a 12" designed more for the turntablist/cult scratch dj. Super hard, dark doubletime and downtempo stuff with some schizophrenic sound banks and sentences. That's actually how I got started with music - making beats that I could scratch to... kind of steadily took off from there. Anyways, Grief Machine is the latest and will be shortly followed by a limited split 7" with a dope producer and good friend of mine Nosaj Thing (LA). I've supplied you with the exclusive demo version of my side, entitled 'Dresden'.

Where, when, how can listeners buy?

Grief Machine is being pressed and distributed in Europe, but I'm being given a bundle to personally distribute around the US. Pre-order information will be available on my page soon. The 7" will be dealt with differently and will be available online at Turntablelab, through me as well as in digital formats via iTunes, Beatport, Wasabeat, etc.

Any word on a tour, booking info, etc? Portland needs some Lorn action...

I'm actually headed to France for a bit this summer, and after that I'm looking to play around in the midwest (STL, Chicago, Milwaukee & Minneapolis). I'm open for whatever... I just love music and it's exciting to see people really get into what I do. As far as booking info, just hit me up and I'll work with you directly - I'm pretty much Han Solo with everything... and I mean everything.
